Houpsitas Big House Project

The Kyuquot (Ka:'yu:'k't'h') / Checleseht (Chek'tles7et'h') First Nations (KCFN) are building a new traditional style Big House and community centre, having been without a longhouse since a government relocation in the 1930s. As part of this project, Ursus and community members recorded and documented 173 culturally modified trees (CMTs), many of them estimated to be over 200 years old, and several having Indigenous logging features, standing-living planked trees, bark stripped trees and a canoe blank. The Big House will include an interpretive trail that highlights a selection of the CMT features.
